"NetDetour Background Process service is not running" error

Symptoms

The NetDetour system tray icon appears gray, indicating that NetDetour is disabled. When attempting to enable the program, you receive the following message:

The NetDetour Background Process service is not running.

Cause

The NetDetour Background Process (ndetourd) Windows service is not running.

Troubleshooting Steps

1. Start the Service Manually:
   • Open Control Panel > System and Security > Administrative Tools.
   • Launch the Services applet.
   • Right-click on NetDetour Background Process and select Start from the context menu.
2. Reinstall NetDetour:
   • If manually starting the service doesn't resolve the issue, reinstall NetDetour.
   • After reinstallation, ensure you restart Windows.
3. Check the Event Log:
   • If the problem persists, check the Applications section of the Windows Event Log for any events with the source NetDetour.
